5 more epic photo locations near Santa Fe, NM
Since publishing my story on some of my favorite photo locations, I've found a few more epic places where I absolutely love to photograph. As with my original list, these locations are favorites because they have plenty of space to move and play, ample sunlight, and do not incur an additional travel fee.
Ski Santa Fe
Distance from Santa Fe: 16 miles
Best Season: Summer, Fall, and during ski months for slope side images
Santa Fe's intimate ski mountain has all the charm of a Colorado ski area, but without the crowds. In the summers, a small field near the parking area transforms with lush grass, tall wildflowers, and evergreen backdrops. In fall, the aspens turn golden, and Ski Santa Fe organizes chairlift rides and other activities. It's a great way to access the mountains without all of the hiking.

Nambé Badlands
Distance from Santa Fe: 20 miles
Best Season: All year
On the road to Chimayó, the Nambé Badlands form a labyrinth of arroyos, sandstone features, and juniper-piñon. This is an ideal location for folks who desire a desertscape close to Santa Fe.

White Mesa
Distance from Santa Fe: 60 miles
Best Season: All year
Tucked on BLM land, this popular mountain biking spot is spectacular for portrait photography. A short walk from a small parking area provides such diversity of backdrop that it's become a new favorite spot. Other photographers have caught on, too, so it's best to go on a week night.

White Rock Overlook
Distance from Santa Fe: 35 miles
Best Season: All year
With sweeping vistas of the Rio Grande, White Rock Overlook has the "wow" factor. It's also well positioned for sunrise and Milky Way blends. Because some of the area does not have guard rails, this spot is not ideal for small children.

Jemez Pueblo
Distance from Santa Fe: 75 miles
Best Season: All year
Across from the Walatowa Visitor Center, dramatic red rocks feel like a mini-Moab. At sunset, the sage and juniper glow beautifully and the rust-colored walls create warmth and contrast. As always, it is important to be respectful of pueblo land and obey signage.
