New Mexico adventures that you'll remember forever

When we think of portraits, we often think of posed images for our Christmas card, our profile picture, or framed over the mantle. With the return of documentary photography and the growing popularity of video, my personal style has evolved to capture emotion, movement, and sincerity. Documenting an experience allows me to create one-of-a-kind imagery that leaves you not only with a more diversified gallery, but also with memories that will last a lifetime.

Decades of international travel and photography have shaped the unique imagery of my portfolio and helped me to compile a distinctive location guide. Among my favorites, here are 5 epic experiences within a 4-hour drive from Santa Fe that will satisfy the most adventurous at heart. For those who like the look of the images but want to skip the adventure, I've offered alternative locations closer to home base.

White Sands National Park

Designated a national park in 2019, White Sands is truly one of the most unique places in the United States. Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin, 275 miles of glistening white gypsum dunefields comprise the largest of its type on the planet. An adventure to White Sands might include sledding, hiking, eloping, or stargazing. Consider a nearby stay at the enchanting El Mistico Ranch.

What to bring:

2 liters of water per person

Your national park pass

Layers

Your leashed dog

ALTERNATIVE LOCATION: White Mesa

High Alpine Hiking

Often referred to as "where the Rockies begin," the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that make up the Pecos and Carson National Forests provide an abundance of hiking opportunities. Consider a hike up Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest point, or a trek up to one of several alpine lakes. This is a great option for adventurous engagements or elopements, as well as families with older children.

WHAT TO BRING:

2 liters of water per person

Good hiking boots

Layers + Rain gear

Salty snacks

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Okay, okay. I know. It's not technically in New Mexico. But the Great Sand Dunes National Park, located right over our northern border in Colorado, is about the same driving distance as White Sands. In fact, the dramatic mountains that rise up behind the tallest dunes in North America are the aforementioned Sangre de Cristos that stretch all the way to Santa Fe. This is a great day trip from the Valle Vidal (see below).

WHAT TO BRING:

Car camping supplies

Good walking shoes

Your national park pass

A towel

ALTERNATIVE LOCATION: Organ Peaks National Monument

Scenic Drive on US-64

Traverse rust-colored deserts, aspen forests, and the country's second highest bridge. The drive from Santa Fe to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge with a return trip via US-64 will leave you awestruck. Although the total drive time is only 4.5 hours, you'll want to give yourself the entire day to savor this extraordinary New Mexico experience. Consider staying in Taos or Ojo Caliente to divide the trip up over 2 days, which will give you time for some short hikes, hot springs, or perhaps a rafting trip. Aim for golden hour at either the Rim Trail or the Brazos Summit for spectacular pictures with sweeping vistas. Be aware that US-64 closes in the winter months.

WHAT TO BRING:

Walking shoes

Your favorite playlist

A few great outfits

A swimsuit

ALTERNATIVE LOCATION: Route 4 scenic route in the Jemez

Peace and quiet in the Valle Vidal

The pristine scenery of the Valle Vidal stole my heart in 2021. Although there are no designated trails, recreation activities abound. Fly fisherman, wildflower enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a slower pace will find serenity in this spectacular valley. And because you can drive the whole unit, hiking is optional.

WHAT TO BRING:

Your coziest sweater

Binoculars

A journal or sketchbook

ALTERNATIVE LOCATION:

Valle Grande
