Brand photography for the creator and the small business

In this visually driven world, beautiful images are essential for artists and business owners. Done well, they can elevate your online presence, convey your personal style, and tell the story of your work.

What is brand photography? Brand photography is a collection of custom images that create a clear and consistent visual identity. My approach to branding sessions is detailed, so read on to understand the process...

A good plan

We aren't winging this! Good brand photography starts with a clear idea of what the business owner wants. Since brand images are used for websites, social media, and print, it's important to have a consistent look. When you book with me, we start with a planning meeting. This is when we decide on location, co-create a shot list, and discuss colors, mood, materials, and light.

Check out the image to the right. While it may seem that I just showed up and clicked this photo, the truth is that it was imagined during a pre-session meeting with the client. Her mood board (and let me tell you, I love sipping tea and moodboarding) guided us to discuss the recipes, the serving dishes, and the overall vibe that would become this photograph.

Brand Portraiture

A brand portrait, rather than a traditional headshot, can start to tell the story of your business. It's an introduction, a warm welcome to your potential clients, which usually appears on the "About" page of your website. A good backdrop is a space that speaks to you, whether it's your studio, a vine wall, or somewhere in nature. Throughout this part of the process, I'll show you the images in camera, so that you can see your expressions and adjust. We are all self-conscious about something, so I use light and angles to highlight your best features. You'll also receive a proof sheet and choose which images you like best for final editing.

Tools + Textures

This is when we photograph the products that you make or sell. Not all branding sessions have products, but that doesn't mean we won't highlight the objects in your space. Tools, textures, desktop items, textiles, or a combination make for beautiful flatlays. What is a flatlay? It's a bird's eye image of a carefully arranged collection of items shot directly from above, although I often take a 45 degree angle shot as well. Creative layouts of products and objects takes a bit of time, but the perspective and composition always make me and my clients so happy.

Storytelling

This is the part where you get to do your thing and maybe even forget the camera is there. While you work, I reference the shot list that we co-created during our planning meeting to make sure we have all of our safe shots. I look for creative angles and compositions. I may change lenses or adjust the light. Often, an unexpected something will happen that inspires a new idea. That's the beauty of authentic storytelling; the moment guides the photography.

In short, it is so important that the photographer understand the client's vision for their set of images. My approach to brand photography is a collaborative process that honors the details of your business or art. Taking the time to get to know you and your work will translate to a collection of images that you will be excited to use on your website, social media, and print materials.
