5 epic photo locations near Santa Fe, NM
I took the leap into this career via my love for travel and landscape photography. I love road trips, big hikes, dramatic skies, and sweeping vistas. New Mexico's epic landscapes continually inspire where and how I photograph families and expecting mamas.
But it's not just about the backdrop. A location could be absolutely beautiful, but if it lacks accessibility or good light, the images could fall flat. These locations are my favorite because they have plenty of space to move and ample sunlight. Additionally, my pricing allows for travel within 60 miles of Santa Fe, so while I'm SO down to travel to Chama or White Sands (two of my favorite New Mexico locations), the following list encompasses places that won't incur an additional travel fee.
Abiquiu
Distance from Santa Fe: 60 miles
Best Season: All year
It’s no wonder that Georgia O’Keeffe was so inspired by Abiquiu’s desertscapes. Painted badlands, red rock, and big skies make this area a New Mexico gem. I’ve roadtripped and photographed here many times, so I’m familiar with several locations, as well as which areas now need special permitting.

Aspen Vista
Distance from Santa Fe: 28 miles
Best Season: Early October
Aptly named, the Aspen Vista Trailhead is a fall favorite for locals and tourists. For the first two weeks of October, golden aspens quake along high mountain trails. During the summer, wildflowers line the trail that leads up to the ski basin, and winter brings beautiful snow perfect for holiday cards.

The Valles Caldera
Distance from Santa Fe: 50 miles
Best Season: Summer
Tall grass, lush valleys, hot springs, and mountain streams make the Valles Caldera one of my favorite places in New Mexico. The Valle Caldera is beautiful at sunset, and it's where I like to finish family session. In summer, campgrounds and hiking trails bloat with visitors from Albuquerque, so it’s best to book on a weekday afternoon to avoid crowds.

Galisteo Basin Preserve
Distance from Santa Fe: 15 miles
Best Season: All year
A treasure southeast of Santa Fe, the Galisteo Basin is a geological beauty full of sculpted arroyos, mountain vistas, and sweeping grasslands. The night skies out here are spectacular, so if you’re wanting a star blend, this is a good place for it.

Elena Gallegos Open Space
Distance from Santa Fe: 60 miles
Best Season: All year
The Sandia Mountains provide some of the most dramatic backdrops in the state, especially during golden hour. Located in the Albuquerque Foothills, this is a popular place for photographers for a reason. Consider a sunrise session for a truly unique experience.
